The number of employees rose 0.5% to 2.56 million. The average gross salary of 898,000 persons, one third of the workforce, was NIS 2,554 in September, one third less than the average national salary. The average salaries in high-tech sectors were as follows: electronic communications - NIS 18,468; advanced scientific and medical equipment - NIS 18,279; and IT services - NIS 15,754. 17,000 employees in Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) and Mekorot National Water Company, 0.7% of Israel’s workforce, earned an average salary of NIS 17,973. 53,700 employees in the banking sector earned an average salary of NIS 16,078, and the combined average salary in the insurance and banking sectors was NIS 13,894. 108,000 public administration employees earned an average salary of NIS 12,169. The average salary in industry was NIS 10,647. The average salary in the transport and communications sectors was NIS 8,793, and NIS 7,627 in the business services sector. The average gross salary of health, welfare and nursing services employees was NIS 6,769; education - NIS 6,186; community, social and personal services - NIS 5,336; and garbage removal and sanitation services - NIS 8,847. 134,000 catering and accommodation employees earned an average salary of NIS 3,614. The average salary in the restaurant sector was NIS 3,143. The average salary of 50,000 agricultural employees was NIS 5,090, while 130,000 construction employees earned an average salary of NIS 6,504. Average salaries rose in the following sectors in the third quarter: banking - up 2.4%; catering and food - up 2.4%; education - up 2%; construction - up 1.5%; industry - up 1.5%; and commerce - up 1%.
