Hadas Manor March 8, 2005 Globes Salary gaps between men and women in high tech are wider than in mixed-high tech and low technology industries, according to Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor planning and economy division figure published today to mark International Women's Day. The figures indicate that the proportion of women managers in industry has risen substantially, and that the salary gaps between men and women in industry in general, and in high tech in particular, has narrowed. However, despite the greater number of women managers, they are still mainly working at low management levels. In addition, despite the claims of gender management equality in high-tech sectors, the salary gaps between men and women are wider in high tech than in low technology industries. Analysis by the planning and economy division also found Israel had 47,000 women managers in 2004, of whom 7,300 were in high tech (15.7%). Israel had 386,400 industrial employees in 2004, of whom 108,600 were women and 277,800 were men. Fewer than 7% of female employees were managers, compared with 11% of male employees who were managers. At 7%, the proportion of female managers in industry was significantly greater than the 4.3% proportion of female managers in the economy as a whole. The planning and economy division said that in the past decade, the gap between the proportion of female managers in industry and male managers has narrowed, thanks to a large increase in the employment of women managers in industry. The proportion of women who are managers has reached 65% of the proportion of men who are managers. In high tech, 8% of women employees are managers, compared with 2.5% in 1995. The proportion of femal managers in mixed-high tech industries is higher, at 8.2%, but lowest in low technology industries - 4.4%. The average gross salary of female managers in industry is currently NIS 13,500, while the average gross salary of male managers is 34% higher - NIS 18,000. Female managers in high tech earn 67% of men's salaries. Female managers in mixed-high tech earn 79% of men's salaries, and female managers in low technology earn 89% of men's salaries. The planning and economy division found that the salary gap per hour was greater in high tech. Only 6.3% of CEOs in industry are women, but the proportion of women in senior management when production, financial services, personnel, advertising and marketing, and computer services are included is 23%.
